VR BOOM SPARKS INTEREST IN TRAVEL INDUSTRY

As VR received an increasing amount of attention and an influx of new users, this client realized the potential VR technology has within the travel and resort industry. In order to bring their vision from concept to code, this client reached out to Chetu, hoping to engineer a resort VR application using Unity.

This application was designed to immerse users in various destinations, allowing them to experience vacation-like settings virtually. Essentially, this VR application would serve as a pre-booking device, an opportunity for consumers to vet their destinations prior to committing. Our client's intent was to provide this app to entities in the hospitality (resort) industry.

VR is an opportunity for resort entities to strengthen consumer relationships through more transparent marketing, a means of conducting better business and increasing profit.

CHETU BUILDS A HOLLISTIC VR EXPERIENCE

The client envisioned a fully immersive experience. To accomplish this, Chetu created the Unity Engine for the application's 360 degree video graphics and synchronized the system with hardware—head mounted device (HMD), water sprayer, essence sprayer, wind blower, and a moving platform.

All hardware would be housed inside a booth to create 4D physical effects for smell, wind, heat, humidity, etc. These technologies needed seamless interconnectivity to effectively simulate the environment the viewer is experiencing.

UNITY GAME ENGINE PROPELS PROJECT

Chetu leveraged the following technologies to bring the VR application into fruition:

  • .NET Framework 4.5
  • C#
  • Unity 5.6 game engine
  • Windows 10
  • Oculus VR headset
  • Android (APK) & iOS (Xcode)
  • Web APIs (for retrieving information from the client/resort's database)

Chetu's deliverable operates on a head mounted device, such as the Oculus headset, and immerses users in virtual 360 degree videos. The software integrates with several in-booth hardware devices, such as those used to create the effects of heat, humidity, water mist, wind and smell.

The VR setting aligns with the respective resort entity's database to display specific environments and resort locations that the administrator can easily toggle through. Chetu produced a fully immersive experience for users, allowing them to virtually experience several vacation destinations before they book.
