Tipping Solutions for a Cashless Society

Chetu developers were called upon to engineer a review, rating, and tipping web application that allows employees to receive recognition for their customer service performance while earning contactless tips through the use of QR code technology.

Serving as a virtual tip jar, this web application enables employees to track when and how many tips they receive in addition to tracking their reviews. A quick scan of a QR code allows customers to send tips and write reviews about their experiences with employees.

Features of the application include a secure portal for customers to send money, fully automated tip distribution, and the ability to integrate with any existing payroll software.

There are benefits to contactless tipping for employees, employers, and customers, as it allows customers to tip when they don’t have cash using a simple app and QR code technology. In addition, it provides real-time insights into employee performance through customer ratings and reviews.

Early on, the client experienced significant challenges with their existing web application that prevented it from being fully functional. The application was built on a Shopify platform. There were certain customizations that were needed as well as additional features to be provided, such as good pay integration. In this case, using the Shopify platform was not ideal as it lacked flexibility which hindered implementing the desired features. These challenges required the services of a software development company that could resolve these issues and get the application up and running.

However, there was another requirement – since the client’s team had no experience in software development, they wanted to partner with a software development company that would also be willing to teach their team about the technical aspects of their project as well as help them build their web application. Chetu’s team of experts was happy to oblige.

Developing a Seamless Solution from Scratch

Chetu’s initial approach to this project was to create a custom web application from scratch using a different technology which would enable customers to send tips to employees and provide reviews. It was necessary for employees to be able to access their tip and customer review information, as well as for employers to be able to manage and monitor employee performance and customer reviews.

The first phase for the project involved the creation of the MVP (minimum viable product) with all of the core features that were integral to the application.

The development environment used in this project included Microsoft Windows, a MySQL 5.c database server, Apache 2.x, PHP 7.4 general-purpose scripting technology, and a Visual Studio Code development editor.

Based on the existing application and code, there were high-level changes identified that needed to be made. This meant establishing a registration component for employers and employees. User access and role management functionalities were also necessary, as was a homepage dashboard. Customer access, as well as email and SMS notification options were needed. Third party integrations were needed for the payment gateway.

A Successful Partnership Brings a Web Application to Life

Upon completion of the project, the client was thrilled with the results as well as the valuable relationship that was established with Chetu.

The web application is now fully functional and allows employees to receive tips digitally and increase their earning potential through cashless tipping. The application also provides them with a record of performance and reviews from customers served that they may use as a reference for future opportunities.

Best of all – the client reported a notable increase in employee retention, which they attribute to improved communication between management and staff that has been facilitated by the app. The client is also pleased with markedly improved morale among staff members, resulting from a newly implemented program that incentivizes exceptional employee performance, which is measured in part by the positive ratings and reviews that customers post on the app.
