Discovery Map: Choosing The Road Not Taken
Discovery Map is a Vermont-based company established in 1981 that creates hand-drawn maps and graphics coupled with local community insight to create a more intimate experience for tourists seeking attractions and businesses ‘off the beaten path.’
Discovery Map works to leverage the knowledge of community locals to ultimately create informative and engaging collateral while also highlighting the value of unique attractions, businesses, and landmarks for tourists seeking options to enhance their vacations and adventures.
Discovery Map is recognized as an integral player in the marketing travel and tourism industry.
“We have a franchise network of about 120 franchisees, and we try to present ourselves as local subject matter experts with unique insight that an algorithm cannot get. My perspective is, in the digital age, there is still room for print, but I think we would be foolish if we did not embrace digital and work to grow our own digital footprint," said Peter Hans, CEO of Discovery Map.
Utilizing Ubuntu for Website Enhancement
Discovery Map tasked Chetu’s expert-level web developers with clearing backlogs and fixing bugs to improve the user experience while optimizing the website content. Chetu worked on extensive existing JIRA tasks, enabling franchisees to cut and crop web-based images, and utilized Ubuntu within the development environment to ultimately revamp Discovery Map’s website.
“We’re a small team and specifically don’t have a ton of development capacity. Chetu’s strength is the ability to deploy resources quickly. Chetu was able to readily plug-in to our existing infrastructure without incident. We had a very long list of bugs, issues, and tweaks we needed but Chetu got a lot of work done,” said Hans.
Updated Website With Custom Development
Discovery Map wanted a more functional and optimized site for their franchisees and to continue building its digital presence. Chetu’s developers worked to grow Discovery Map’s digital footprint but had to rectify several site bugs and optimize functionality. Chetu utilized the following components:
Ubuntu operating system
After utilizing the components, Chetu was tasked with completing multiple work tickets detailing what website areas needed to be rectified or enhanced.
“It was a lot of work but the Chetu team put its head down and got right to work. I thought the process was good and the team did very well,” said Hans.
As with any website development project, Chetu received numerous requests and directions for page design and functionality. Chetu carefully researched each component to identify issues and formulate resolutions. Discovery Map is a repeat client and was confident Chetu could complete the ambitious task of overhauling and optimizing its website.
Custom Website Development Grows Digital Footprint
Discovery Map built its reputation as a print-centric company but Hans stated the website enhancement project will serve as a necessary foundation for growing the company’s digital footprint.
“I want to strengthen our digital capacity because we do have a limitation. Working together with Chetu, I feel we made a lot of progress and it was a positive experience.”
