    Payments
  • Core Technologies

The technology leveraged on this project included:

  • Clover (Mini v.3)
  • Oracle Micros POS (Symphony Server)
  • EMC Machine
  • Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF)
  • Dynamic Link Library (DLL)

Project Solution

Chetu developed a middleware application to display a donation pop-up screen on the client’s preexisting Clover devices for collecting contributions, improving financial sustainability.

The Client

Our client is a religious organization with multiple places of worship across the globe that has cafés in each location where congregants can buy ready-to-eat foods, order meals, and eat inside. While the cafés were successful, the client wanted to implement an additional source of financial support without straining its relationship with the congregants. Seeking a solution that was unintrusive to the system and customer experience, the client contacted Chetu.

The project was to implement an at-register donation system, an approach that has grown in recent years. In a Good Scout survey, 71% of consumers said they donate to charities during a transaction. Thanks to automatic POS terminals like Clover, collecting these contributions has never been easier and more efficient.

The Approach

As a certified Clover partner, Chetu created an Android-based middleware application that connects different resources to present the donation page. Our team of developers also leveraged their Oracle partner certification to fully utilize the Micros POS (Symphony Server) already running on the client’s POS system. The total result of these multiple technologies is a seamless solution integrated into the preexisting Clover system.

The system works by sending and receiving requests to and from the POS machine to generate a donation screen, prompting users with three client-selected monetary amounts or the option to decline. If the user chooses to donate, the selected amount will be added to the transaction total. After the transaction, the POS machine will classify the payment request as success, failure, or cancellation.

To ensure the solution is used long into the future, Chetu developed additional buttons for monitoring, maintaining, and activating the system:

All this is to say that, from the customer side, the donation process is quite literally as easy as pressing a button.

The Impact

Clover Mini 3 helps raise money for charities

The success of this feature has also been documented across the entire payment industry. In 2022, reports showed that 77 POS-based donation campaigns raised over $749 million for charities. The practice is seeing increased appreciation as time goes on, as 70% of millennial consumers enjoy being asked to donate at checkout. The aftermath result has also been positive, as 79% of consumers expressed positive sentiments about a charity after donating to it.

As a volunteer-based company, the client has limited revenue streams, making at-register donations an excellent solution for supporting its mission. Chetu’s solution sustains the group through an additional source of funding that keeps prices the same and heightens the congregation’s enthusiasm within the group via active patronage.
